BOTOX FAQ's

Botox, short for Botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into specific muscles in very small, controlled doses, Botox works by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is responsible for sending signals from nerves to muscles, causing them to contract. By blocking this signal, Botox effectively relaxes the muscle, reducing its activity.

Common side effects include temporary bruising at the injection site, headaches, and, rarely, unintended muscle weakness near the injection site. In some cases, more severe side effects like difficulty swallowing or breathing can occur, particularly if the toxin spreads beyond the target area.
The effects of Botox are temporary, typically lasting 3 to 6 months. As the muscle activity gradually returns, wrinkles or symptoms may reappear, requiring repeat treatments.

Before Your Botox Treatment:

  1. *Skip the Blood Thinners: Try to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood thinners for a week before your appointment to keep bruising to a minimum. *Before discontinuing any medications, please consult your physician to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your health.
  2. Lay Off the Alcohol: It’s a good idea to skip the wine or cocktails 24 hours before your treatment to help reduce swelling and bruising.
  3. Hydrate: Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water—your skin will thank you!
  4. Share Your Health Info: Let your provider know about any medical conditions or medications you’re on. It helps them tailor the treatment just for you.
  5. Pause on Certain Skincare Products: Hold off on retinoids, exfoliating products, and products that contain active ingredients for a few days before your appointment to keep your skin calm and happy.

After Your Botox Treatment:

  1. Hands Off: Try not to touch, rub, or massage the treated areas for at least 24 hours. You want the Botox to stay right where it’s supposed to!
  2. Keep Your Head Up: Stay upright for the first four hours to help the Botox settle in nicely.
  3. Take It Easy: Skip intense workouts or activities for a day—give your skin a break and let the Botox work its magic.
  4. Avoid Heat: Give saunas, hot showers, and sun exposure a pass for 24 hours to keep swelling and bruising at bay.
  5. Check-In: Don’t forget to follow up with your provider if you have any questions or just to make sure everything’s looking great.
